Why Is Everyone Hating On Cathie Wood?
Cathie Wood is someone people love to hate. Why? Well, she is blamed for losing her investors' money, despite the fact that these investors are the ones who took on excessive risk in the first place. In today's video, we're going to compare ARK Invest's performance against an appropriate benchmark - not the S&P or NASDAQ. Turns out Cathie Wood worked with MSCI to develop custom indices to match her thematic ETFs. So, how have her funds fared against these custom indices? Let's find out.

The Safest Way to Invest in Crypto

COIN stock may just be the safest way to invest in crypto. Why? Because the company makes money whether people are buying or selling via transaction revenue. While they're still very correlated to the price of bitcoin, Coinbase has finally managed to diversify their revenues away from retail transactions, something the company was overly reliant on back in 2021. Retail transaction revenue was o...

Ark underperform in challenging markets due Lack of specialized analysts. Ark doesn’t reinvest enough of its commissions into hiring analysts with deep expertise in specific industries. Their narratives don’t always work in challenging markets. Wood's communication style is forceful and lacking humility. This doesn’t resonate with investors, during periods of growth stocks underperformance.

I think people just have a weird quirk about seeing people fail inversely to their success. Especially if those people are always making market predictions, ie; never trust a grown man with a sound board to tell you what to purchase. For me personally it is her obsession with Tesla. Last time I checked, which was some time ago, even her biotech fund was some 10% in Tesla (why, Aunt Cathie, why is Tesla a biotech company). Although maybe ask me in ten years when Tesla hospitals are on the moon.

You are right. Nobody seems to remember when she could do no wrong. That was really recently actually! My how fortunes can change in the wonder wacky world of disruptive tech. I think when she finds stocks she likes a lot she just stuffs them into other ETFs so she can own more. Yes, there may be some grand vision we're not seeing, but frankly it's a bit annoying. Also don't like when she holds an ARK ETF within an ARK ETF.

I have 0.833% of my total portfolio in various ARKs. I have all I want, now it's time for their team to make good. I could have used that same money over the past few years taking females to dinner or movies, that would have been an absolute waste. FSD isn't ready just quite yet, synthetic biology is plugging away, they're ironing out the kinks and expanding the database. Artificial Intelligence is stupid, but like Comedian, Alonzo Bodden says "Stupid don't get tired". So it just keeps plugging away, night and day getting better. But wait... Another 1% of my portfolio is Palantir, why am I there? Because Palantir IS READY and I'm up like 25% in that position. ARK also called NVIDIA and TESLA. I'm also a Electronic Technologist, this stuff "works", I finally sat down and watched a TESLA "Autonomy" presentation in real time and I was impressed by the architecture. Synthetic Biology will replace solid state hard drives and all the other claims they make. Far as their Musk' and Wood's politics are concerned... I'm Black, that's just one more reason I have a Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology; I don't have time to wait on Politicians and if YOU DO.... Fare thee well. I wish you all the best but you might want to get a cabinet position (just like Wood's mentor, Dr. Art Laffer) if you really want it to work for you. (or become a multi-millionaire) something along those lines.

I think C. Woods is good at making herself money. Key words main phase “ herself “. That’s probably a good enough reason for her polarizing nature. I don’t have anything to do with her and I don’t have to listen to her so I really don’t care. Is she successful? Yes SHE is. Does she make other people money? Yet to be proven over the long term. A friend of mine made the statement that “ Tesla is a successful company “ and I countered with “ for how long? Would you say they are as successful as say JNJ? Or PG? Maybe Walmart ? “ the answer is a resounding no. Time will prove all.

I’m a little confused about Coin. I hope someone can explain. If ETFs are driving the vast majority of new crypto investments, how does COIN capitalize on that? Wouldn’t most of those ETFs be purchased through traditional brokers? In addition, I understand that BTC will be traded on CME, taking the majority of institutional Coinbase users. Finally, is it possible to use a cold wallet as collateral or leverage for any other investment? If not, I’m really missing the need to buy through BTC. Either I am missing something or the market is. I’m not much into crypto. So, it could definitely be me, but I don’t see the use case expanding here. I see it shrinking.

There are over 11,000 crypto "assets." Just two of those are - Bitcoin and Ethereum - are seeing mainstream adoption from institutions so far. COIN's revenues point to institutional fees on crypto transactions which could relate to ETFs. Not sure. At any rate, Coinbase seems likely to be a dominant player in whatever crypto turns out to be.

We are looking into a Quantigence ETF. That might be able to get some serious traction. A tech ETF would be very tough to pull off as you're competing against a lot of funds targeting a red hot theme. Our brand isn't big enough yet to provide some leverage there. As for finding managers that outperformed, that sounds like a good topic for a future video. Maybe the most notable example if the incredible Medallion Fund. Joe P. PS: Check out the below from Cornell Capital on Medallion. "Over the period from the start of trading in 1988 to 2018, $100 invested in Medallion would have grown to $398.7 million, representing a compound return of 63.3%. Returns of this magnitude over such an extended period far outstrip anything reported in the academic literature. Furthermore, during the entire 31-year period, Medallion never had a negative return despite the dot.com crash and the financial crisis."

@@Nanalyze I'm excited to hear about the possibility of a Quantigence ETF, Joe! Best of luck and please keep us posted! You can definitely count me in. As for the quote you provided about the Medallion fund, I think you are referring to Renaissance Technologies' Medallion Fund. Cornell Capital doesn't have a fund by that name. One interesting fact that I learned is that it's only available to current and past employees. There is a 5% fixed fee and 44% performance fee whatever that means. Even accounting for them, it has an annual return of 39%. It's astounding how well they performed. What's their secret sauce? Hmmm...🤔 One section of the article caught my attention: "As described by Zuckerman, Medallion’s strategy involved constantly opening and covering thousands of short-term positions, both long and short. According to Robert Mercer, one of Medallion’s key investment managers, Medallion was right on only about 50.75% of its trades. Nonetheless, he stated that taken over millions of trades that percentage allowed the firm to make billions. It is worth noting that engaging in millions of trades suggests that the transaction costs would be significant. The fact that the reported gross returns are after trading costs, makes Medallion’s performance even more extraordinary. It also implies that Renaissance was apparently particularly effective in minimizing such costs." Medallion S&P 500 2008 83.38% -38.49% 2009 38.98% 23.45% 2010 29.40% 12.78% 2011 37.02% 0.00% 2012 29.01% 13.41% 2013 46.93% 29.60% 2014 39.20% 11.39% 2015 36.01% -0.73% 2016 35.62% 9.54% 2017 45.02% 19.42% 2018 39.98% -6.24%

I love the armchair quarterbacks, specifically, those that have never made notable, consistent returns.. if you are managing your own money, you can buy and sell without answering to anyone. You have no prospectus that drives your investments. You can sell every stock you own in minutes without having any effect on the price of those investments. You can move into anything you want. You still struggle to make great returns. Getting lucky on one stock does not count. With that said, I look at Cathy like most private equity/ venture capital. She will likely fail on most of her choices, but the returns on her winners are outrageous! This is NOT the economic environment for her to thrive, but watch what happens as interest rates come down and small caps start to flourish. She’ll be back in the saddle again. And many of those throwing barbs now will be remarking about how brilliant they were to catch the bottom of her funds. Everybody gets miraculous returns when they don’t have to show their portfolio!

How is something that you individually hold, still allowed to be in the benchmark, when the exact things you hold, is what makes up over 80% results of the so called benchmark???? Example, i hold AMZN, TSLA, AAPL, META, MSFT, NVDA, GOOGL, AVGO, LRCX, COST, CMG, BRK.B & NFLX Remove these and there is NOTHING that can beat these positon results, so why is it racing against itself, if you were to remove these, the ramianing 490 haven't broken over 2% year over year for the past decade. A benchmark should be something that beats your holding, not what is the only thing holding it up.🤔

I liked the video, while most of my money is not invested in cathie woods funds and some of her predictions are very "optimistic" I do find the research is very useful. I also think you could make a lot of money buying low and selling high on the volatility, but then why not just pick a volatile asset. Given her portfolio is interest rate sensitive and interest rates are high currently do you think she is doing relatively well given her strategy? I'd be interested in updated videos (I am a paying subscriber) showing for example a general analysis of her biggest investments and changes e.g is she dependent on 1 or 2 really successful stocks to outperform other thematic benchmarks and if she misses nvidia or tesla does she underperform, if so why e.g. poor timing? Also I guess this does make the point that beating a benchmark is exceptionally hard regardless of how good your research is, with Nvidia being a great example of something that Cathie sold off, but predicted. I myself fear jumping on the Nvidia bandwagon because I was too late to jump on early and can't predict the top. I think it will follow the gartner hype cycle with nvidia gaining till investors realise ai is not generating gdp changing profits in the short run, then will dip till ai develops more profitable use cases and soars again assuming competitors dont catch up. I could be wrong though, if that does occur I'd buy a large dip. Would be interested in your thoughts as someone who owns Nvidia?

You had me at the words "paying subscriber." You made this video possible. Thank you! Good question on factoring in interest rates. That's what she says as well. Once we see interest rates fall, many of her names will benefit. Let's see. Analyzing all her trades is really tough because she moves around a lot - analyzing the change in her top ten might be interesting. We actually have a piece in the queue titled, "Stocks Cathie Wood Sold | Reviewing ARK's Trades." Maybe we'll pick that up for a coming video. She has made a number of good calls selling popular names before they declined that we've noticed. Others, maybe not such good timing. Yep, you have a great point there! Being right about some theme and then profiting off it are two very different animals. It's damn tough! We've been trying to do it for decades now. You win some, you lose some. Your losers always feel worse than your winners (human psychology). Regarding NVIDIA, we keep it simple. Until growth stalls, we enjoy the ride while trimming our position to not be overly overweight. We might do another piece on NVIDIA at some point because it's so popular. Maybe a look at valuation again. This might be an article and/or video. Thank you for the engaging comment and financial support! Joe P.

The way I see it, Cathy Wood is giving people an option and people can take it or leave it. Most funds out there are weighted about 90% to the magnificent 7 companies and to me that seems like kind of a scam. After all, how hard is it for someone to just invest in those companies individually and avoid the management fees. But once again, it's up to the individual investor to know what they are investing in. If people are going to hate on something, why not hate on the leveraged ETFs like SQQQ, TQQQ and others? I think those are a much bigger trap to investors than Cathy Wood's funds are yet you don't hear a peep out of the Cathy Wood critics on those funds.

This is an important point to make which goes over most people's heads. Getting into a top financial firm is extremely tough. Extremely. Even tougher? Building a reputation. That's because top firms out there hire only the best and the brightest. Some of the smartest people in the world work on Wall Street. That's a fact. Another interesting fact is that 95% of them can't beat a benchmark. It's very easy to sit in the old recliner having a few suds on a Friday morning and taking pot shots at Cathie's intelligence. Experienced professionals who have sat across hundreds of people in a finance career quickly recognize competence. It does not equate to investment performance. That's why it's so tough to make money by beating the market. Again, Joe retail never seems to get this. Joe P.

Yes indeed! The whole idea of the reverse split is to keep the stock over a dollar in value so that it remains listed in the market. The split was designed to bring it up to around $10 dollars. Think about this for a second. They didn't bring it up to, let's say $2.00 dollars. Why? Because they (management) know that a $2 dollars value was not gonna be enough to keep the stock at over a dollar to remain listed. In other words, management knows they got nothing good right now to keep the stock from falling more than 50% in value. Now the stock was at around $10 before falling to $8.9 the 1st day, followed by a jump to $10.55 the following day. Today, 3rd day after the split, the stock dropped to a new NEW low of $8.02 and going. Take about 30 percent out of the .37 pennies it was before the split, that's were you are today. Is it worth holding the share? If you already lost more than 50% my guess is you are an all in or all out! and you are a long term holder too. If anything good is to happen with NKLA is definitely in a long term, if anything! Management got really nothing in hand for the short or mid terms other than paying debt and finding ways to keep their huge salaries. Let's just hole the trucks don't burn down this time around. For those thinking about getting in right now for the 1st time, my advice would be to wait until the stock drops to about maybe $5 and then do another research to see if it is worth it. Always do your own research... ALWAYS. or I guess you could buy bearish options and benefit from it ;) this could go back to pennies for what I personally see... but that's just my opinion. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. Keep in mind; In business, you can not get new loans to cover for old ones... it just doesn't work like that. This is what NKLA is trying to do with the split. I am 100% sure aggregations to the share will come next. Aggregations are like a slap in the face to existing/old investors because it devalues the share even more, but it is a way to get new cash to expand, or in this case to cover for debt(s), salaries, and other expenses. So we have to always ask ourselves; Is it worth paying executives their high salaries when the company is underwater (more than 100% into debt)? I like the Hydrogen industry/market and its future plans, especially now that TOYOTA has built the best in the world hydrogen engine that could change the automobile industry for ever.... and I did believe in NKLA at one point. If only management was serious about it the company would've been on different grounds today. But they were a bunch of clowns, and that's the truth. Now they're talking about lawsuits among themselves, embarrassing for the company. I sold it long time ago and I'm glad I did... been watching it since and still not a good one for me just yet. My advise? Be wise and careful, even under new management, there might still be a few lions around shorting it from within, thieves ready to play around the bushes with your money. I strongly believe in the Hydrogen industry for future energy. It could be the real answer to a clean energy solution. The EV industry was more a political decision than anything else, as most of us should already know by now, it does not help our planet in any way, it just help the lawmakers creating the new laws under the presumption, and their investors.. Not that I believe in the global-warming crap anyway! What I do believe is in a free society and energy shouldn't be an exception. Last but not least, I will vote for Trump in Nov. I prefer to have gas at $1.86, closed borders and nuclear family values more than anything right now. The hell with the woke sick movement. Conservative rich MAGA 100% hehehe
